Dermaplaning Aftercare Routine for the First Week

5 min read

Dermaplaning leaves the complexion feeling remarkably smooth, but the treatment itself is only part of the experience. A thoughtful dermaplaning aftercare routine helps your skin stay comfortable as it adjusts, protects the exfoliation benefits you just received, and reduces the chance that irritation interrupts your results.

Because dermaplaning removes surface buildup along with fine facial hair, skin may be more responsive to the products and environments it encounters afterward. That does not mean your face needs an elaborate recovery plan. In most cases, gentler is better for the first several days.

Why Dermaplaning Aftercare Matters

Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliating treatment performed with a sterile blade. It carefully removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, often called peach fuzz. The result can be a softer texture and a more even-looking surface for makeup and skincare.

That newly exfoliated surface has less of its usual buffer against friction, strong ingredients, heat, and sun exposure. Applying products that normally feel fine can cause stinging or redness after treatment. Thoughtful aftercare gives the skin barrier time to settle while keeping the complexion hydrated and protected.

Your esthetician's recommendations should always come first, especially if you have acne, rosacea, eczema, a history of sensitivity, or use prescription skincare. The right plan is personal. A client with resilient, balanced skin may be ready to return to her normal routine sooner than someone who is dry, reactive, or using active treatments.

The First 24 Hours: Keep Your Routine Quiet

For the rest of the day, treat your skin with a light touch. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, or checking the texture repeatedly. Even clean hands can transfer oil and bacteria, while unnecessary touching creates friction on freshly exfoliated skin.

If you cleanse, choose a mild, non-abrasive cleanser and use lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean, soft towel rather than rubbing. Follow with a simple hydrating moisturizer that feels comfortable on your skin. This is not the time to introduce a new serum or test a product that has caused even mild tingling in the past.

Sun protection is especially worthwhile after dermaplaning. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors, and reapply as directed when you are spending time outside. A hat and shade offer useful added protection during a walk through Harvard Square, a commute, or any extended time near bright windows.

It is also wise to skip makeup for the remainder of the day when possible. Allowing the skin to remain clean and uncomplicated can be more comfortable. If you need makeup for work or an event, use clean brushes or sponges and choose familiar products that do not tend to irritate your skin.

Days Two and Three: Hydrate and Protect

Mild, temporary pinkness or sensitivity can happen after dermaplaning, particularly on drier or more reactive complexions. By the next day, many clients feel comfortable, but comfort should guide your routine rather than the calendar.

Continue with a gentle cleanser, a hydrating moisturizer, and daily sunscreen. Look for products that support moisture without relying on exfoliating acids, abrasive particles, or strong fragrance. Professional skincare is helpful here because an esthetician can recommend formulas that fit your current skin condition rather than offering a one-size-fits-all answer.

For at least 48 to 72 hours, many clients benefit from pausing stronger active ingredients. This often includes retinoids, exfoliating acids such as glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid, acne spot treatments, benzoyl peroxide, and vitamin C formulas that are acidic or tend to sting. Some people need a longer pause. If your skin still feels sensitive, tight, or warm, give it more time.

Avoid facial scrubs, cleansing brushes, exfoliating pads, peel-off masks, and at-home peels during this period. Dermaplaning has already provided exfoliation. Adding more too soon does not improve the outcome and can leave skin feeling overworked.

The Rest of the First Week

As your skin returns to normal, reintroduce your usual products gradually. Start with one active product rather than returning to everything at once. If it feels comfortable after a day or two, you can continue. If it stings, causes persistent redness, or leaves the skin unusually dry, pause and return to the gentle basics.

This gradual approach is particularly useful for clients who use retinol, acne treatments, or multi-step routines. A product may not be wrong for your skin overall. It may simply be too much immediately after a treatment.

Sunscreen remains a daily priority throughout the week and beyond. Exfoliated skin can be more vulnerable to the visible effects of UV exposure, including uneven-looking tone. Consistent protection helps preserve the polished, healthy-looking finish clients enjoy after dermaplaning.

What to Avoid After Dermaplaning

For a few days, give your complexion a break from anything that adds heat, sweat, friction, or extra exfoliation. The exact timeframe depends on your skin and your esthetician's guidance, but it is generally sensible to postpone the following:

  • Intense workouts, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, and very hot showers for the first day

  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, and chlorinated water while skin feels sensitive

  • Facial waxing, threading, harsh shaving, or other hair-removal methods on treated areas

  • Strong exfoliants, retinoids, acne treatments, and at-home chemical peels

  • Tanning, prolonged direct sun exposure, and self-tanner on the face if skin is irritated

Do not pick at small flakes or blemishes that may appear. Let the skin recover naturally, and contact a skincare professional if you are unsure whether a product or service is appropriate during your aftercare period.

Pairing Dermaplaning With Other Treatments

Dermaplaning can complement a customized facial or hydration-focused skincare service, but treatment timing matters. Combining too many exfoliating services close together can be uncomfortable and may not suit every complexion.

At Sasha Salon and Spa, personalized care begins with paying attention to what your skin needs that day. A busy Cambridge client preparing for an occasion may want a smooth makeup application, while someone managing dryness or sensitivity may benefit from a more conservative treatment plan. Let your esthetician know about recent facials, waxing, peels, laser treatments, injectables, new medications, and the skincare products you use at home.

When to Check In With a Professional

A little sensitivity that improves quickly can be normal. However, persistent burning, swelling, a spreading rash, pronounced itching, or signs of an allergic reaction deserve prompt attention from an appropriate medical professional. Do not try to correct a significant reaction with more active products.

If you regularly experience breakouts, dryness, or redness after exfoliation, mention it before your next appointment. Dermaplaning may still be an option, but the frequency, accompanying products, and treatment plan may need adjusting.

Can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?

It is best to wait until the next day when you can. If makeup is necessary, apply it with freshly cleaned tools and keep the rest of your routine gentle. Removing makeup thoroughly but softly at the end of the day is equally important.

When can I use retinol after dermaplaning?

Many people wait at least two to three days, but the ideal timing depends on the strength of the product and how your skin feels. If you use prescription retinoids or have sensitive skin, follow the advice of your prescribing clinician or esthetician.

Will dermaplaning make facial hair grow back thicker?

No. Dermaplaning removes hair at the surface of the skin and does not change its color, thickness, or growth rate. As it grows back, it may feel different at first because the hair has a blunt tip, but its underlying structure has not changed.

The most effective aftercare is not complicated. Give your skin a few calm days, use products you know it tolerates well, and let comfort guide the pace of your regular routine.
